May 2026 MGOC Garden Tour

I volunteer at the Orange Coast College Horticulture department. I advise them on their cycad plantings, have donated plant material, and do some pruning. They sometimes give me plant material in return.

The “blob” was a gift from the private collection of a staff member. It is, ready for this?, Deuterocohnia brevifolia. It is a bromeliad, or rather a large colony of bromeliads. It’s from South America. In our yard it is growing on an elevated pile of sand, gravel and rock, well above the soil line. This plant has been growing for at least 30 years to reach its current size.
