My wife Kim went to high school and college in Hawaii. We still have many friends there and visit often. Among our friends is a family on Kaua’I with a pineapple farm. The flesh of their pineapples is almost white and much sweeter than locally available fruit. We are growing their pineapples in our front and back yard.
The key points are to root the tops in plain water, then plant out in fast-draining soil in full sun. South-facing exposures are best. Water frequently, feed occasionally, and wait. At least three years to maturity and fruit. The main plant will die but look for pups on the side that will continue in place.
